This is the fifth and lastin a series about advice I would give to my 17-year-old self.

As a senior portrait artist in Plano, I think a lot about high school students and remember my own high school years. (It has been quite a while, in case you're wondering.) I graduated when I was 17, which is why I am writing to that 17-year-old and not that 18-year-old.  Lots of stuff happened in that one year.

Here are my next five pieces of advice to my younger self.  These are a lot lighter than the last one:

  1. Be thankful. You are lucky to live in the day, time, and place you live in.  Be grateful for all the blessings in your life.
  2.
  3.
  4. Learn how to graciously accept a compliment.  A simple "thank you" will do.
  5.
  6.
  7. Don't be judgmental about other people. You will never know what someone else's life is really like.
  8.
  9.
  10. Learn how to cook.
  11.
  12.
  13. Procrastinating is a bad habit, so stop it.  When you put things off, they turn your sunny days into days filled with dread and anxiety.  Just get it done.
  14.
  15.
